Yesterday, i signed up for automatic driving schools, i've never been a fan of manual cars. To me, driving should be pleasure, pure bliss, just you, the wheel and the open road. You shouldn't have to trouble yourself with gear changes and such boring necessities. Therefore, i decided that my first car would be an auto. However, should i take normal lessons or just the automatic? In the end i took the trip down to the automatic driving schools because i wanted to learn how to drive my way, the way i wanted to drive.

Automatic driving schools are strange. Clearly, they're the same as normal driving schools but somehow people have a different attitude towards you when you drive an automatic. People think you're crazy and it's evident by the way they constantly ask questions like 'are you sure you don't want to drive a manual?' they think you're silly because learning to drive in a manual allows you to do both, but automatic driving schools only allow you to drive automatics. The sensible option would clearly have been to learn in a manual but never the less i stubbornly decided to drive an automatic.

All i had driven before was a moped. A pathetic scooter that sounded like a sewing machine that badly needed a repair. It got me from A to B, but the power i felt as i pressed, even gently, on the pedal of the car, was phenomenal. I had never experienced anything like it. I loved it.

My instructor was curious as to why i had chosen to drive an automatic. I explained to him at great length how i just wanted the pure thrill of driving with no excess effort.

Even after just 1 lesson i had fallen in love with driving. At that moment i couldn't think of anything i'd rather be doing than driving aimlessly up, down, around. I had to wait for my next lesson though. So i guess i'll have to be patient, something i can't really confess to being good at.

By the time my next lesson came around i was so excited i almost sprinted down the driveway and leapt, dukes of hazzard style, through the window into the seat and sped off at 100mph. Clearly, i refrained from such things as i don't think my instructor would be too impressed considering it was my 2nd lesson and i would probably crash and kill us both.

I love driving. I can't wait to get my own car, but i think i want a manual.
